Event Description

The acquisition of two major coin collections (Peter Donald and Chris and Helen Theodotou), has placed Princeton in the forefront of institutions supporting research in Byzantine Numismatics. Both of these purchases were made with the help of generous support of the Friends of the Princeton University Library and the Seeger Center for Hellenic Studies.

Among the activities initiated to accompany these acquisitions, Princeton University is collaborating with other major institutions, Dumbarton Oaks, Oxford University, and the American Numismatic Society, in an effort to create the development of a shared-open-data web platform for Byzantine coinage.

In order to celebrate the acquisition of these important collections and launch the Byzantine coinage platform, Prof. Alan Stahl and Dr. Elena Baldi are planning of a in Interactional conference to be held at Princeton on April 25-28 2024

This will be a three-day conference, the first devoted solely to Byzantine numismatics. We have invited leading scholars in the field for three plenary lectures and twenty additional scholars who will present their research papers. The conference will end with a work session to deal with issues concerned with the creation and population of the shared-open-data platform.
